Man arrested following incident in Bootle supermarket

Merseyside Police have arrested a man following a report of a serious assault in a supermarket in Bootle this afternoon (Saturday 12 May 2018). Emergency services were called at around 4.35pm to reports a man in his 50s had sustained a puncture wound to his leg following the incident inside Lidl, Marsh Lane. He was taken to hospital for treatment where his condition is described as stable. A 21-year-old man from Bootle was detained by staff and arrested by officers shortly after on suspicion of Section 18 wounding. He has been taken to a police station to be interviewed. A knife has been recovered from the scene. Witnesses are being spoken to, a forensic examination of the scene is taking place and CCTV opportunities are being explored. Chief Inspector Mike Barrett said: "I want to make it absolutely clear that Merseyside Police will not tolerate the use of knives as weapons on our streets, and the force is determined to stop knife crime from causing fear and harm in our communities. "It is clearly unacceptable for people to behave in this way in a supermarket, as people simply go about their daily business, and we would appeal for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact police."
