A major milestone has been reached in Bootle’s transformation, as demolition officially begins at Bootle Strand Shopping Centre, marking the first phase of an ambitious regeneration project that will reshape the heart of the town for future generations.
Led by Sefton Council, this bold development aims to turn Bootle town centre into a thriving, inclusive and modern space where local people, businesses and visitors can come together, enjoy new opportunities, and feel proud of their town.
Phase One – What’s Happening:

This initial phase of redevelopment includes:
🌳 The creation of new public spaces designed for community use and events
🛍️ The introduction of modern retail and leisure units that reflect today’s needs
💼 Flexible business accommodation to support local entrepreneurs and attract new investment
🎭 Improved community and cultural facilities to foster creativity and connection
🚉 Upgraded transport links to better connect Bootle with the wider region
As work gets underway, local businesses will remain open, and the council has pledged to keep disruption to a minimum throughout the project.
A Vision Already Coming to Life:

This regeneration is already making a difference. The Salt and Tar events space, located nearby, is breathing new life into Bootle with a vibrant programme of live performances, markets, and cultural events — bringing people back into the town and restoring a sense of pride and excitement.
The redevelopment of the Strand is the next big step forward, reinforcing the council’s long-term vision for Bootle as a place that is not just surviving — but thriving.
Backed by Major Investment:
The project is supported by £20 million in government funding and additional investment from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. It’s not just about buildings — it’s about people.
Sefton Council has committed to making sure that the regeneration delivers tangible benefits to the local community, including:
🧑🔧 32 apprentice weeks – giving young people hands-on experience
🎓 12 student placements – offering real-world learning opportunities
📚 60 hours of education and skills training – supporting upskilling across the borough
💼 Local employment opportunities through Sefton Community Learning Service and Sefton@Work
This work supports Sefton’s wider ambitions to build a resilient local economy, improve health and wellbeing, and make Bootle a place people are proud to call home.
Looking Ahead
This is just the beginning. In the coming months, residents will start to see visible changes as the site evolves. Sefton Council will continue to engage with the community and provide regular updates throughout the redevelopment.
