Bootle’s Canal of Light event returned on Thursday 13th November — and this year’s celebration was brighter, bigger, and more inspiring than ever before. Hundreds of people gathered along the canal at The Lock & Quay to witness an unforgettable night of colour, community spirit, and creativity.
The free event, now in its second year, transformed the canal into a river of glowing boats, illuminated paddlers and dazzling light displays. The procession featured an impressive line-up of local community groups and charities, all coming together to celebrate unity, wellbeing and the power of shared experiences.
One of the standout contributions came from Sean’s Place, whose members took to the water with confidence and pride.
Sean’s Place said: “Tonight, our members took to the water as part of the Canal of Light event organised by our friends at Lock & Quay. It was a brilliant evening with members from the community all coming together to support one another.”

They were joined by paddlers from Bootle Canoe & Outdoor Club CIC, Bradbury Fields, Galloways, Halles Hub, Sean’s Place, Scrapyard Studios, and Liverpool Canoe Polo & Kayak Club – Friends of Allonby, each playing their part in creating the magical spectacle that lit up the waterway.
The famous illuminated Dragon also made a welcome return, expertly crafted by Julian Taylor and Mike Walker, much to the delight of spectators lining the towpath.
Behind the scenes, the event was supported by Lock & Quay, SAFE Regeneration Ltd, and a dedicated team of volunteers who ensured visitors could enjoy the night safely. Thanks were also given to Gavin Scott, Alma Moore and Ste Penn for capturing the evening’s highlights on film.
Families, walkers, and supporters gathered along the towpath, many bringing their own lanterns and lights to add to the atmosphere. The Lock & Quay pub and food van were open throughout the event, offering refreshments as people enjoyed the stunning views over the illuminated canal.
This year’s Canal of Light proved not only to be a vibrant visual display, but a powerful reminder of how strong and connected the Bootle community truly is. The event continues to grow into a cherished local tradition, showcasing the very best of community collaboration, creativity, and resilience.
Organisers have already hinted at an even bigger and brighter event next year — and if this year was anything to go by, it promises to be unmissable.
Here’s to Canal of Light 2026.
