Bootle’s streets are set to become cleaner and safer as Sefton Council begins rolling out its new ‘Sacks to Bins’ scheme. Hundreds of households in Derby Ward, which have relied on black sack collections for years, are now receiving brand-new wheelie bins for both recycling and general waste.
Deliveries of the new brown recycling and grey general waste bins began on Friday 15th August, with the first collections scheduled for Wednesday 20th August. To make sure no one is left unsure about the changes, residents have also received letters and collection calendars setting out the new schedule.
The move comes after Sefton Council’s #WhyFlyTip? campaign highlighted residents’ concerns over sack collections. Overflowing bags and rubbish scattered by gulls, rats, dogs and cats have long been a problem in some areas, as well as the increased risk of fly-tipping.
Cllr Peter Harvey, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene, explained: “We listened to residents and their concerns about sack collections. That’s why we’re rolling out these new wheelie bins. Residents I’ve spoken to have been very positive about the change. Over the course of a year, this scheme will remove hundreds of thousands of bin bags from Bootle’s streets.”
The council says the scheme will not only make Bootle’s streets cleaner but also improve recycling rates across the area. Where possible, the roll-out will be extended to other parts of Sefton still using sack collections.
Cllr Harvey added: “We are determined to make Sefton cleaner and greener, and moving from sacks to bins, in line with residents’ wishes, is a key part of that vision.”
As well as introducing the new bins, Sefton Council is continuing its crackdown on fly-tipping, working with local residents on community clean-ups and issuing fines to those caught dumping waste illegally.
