Emergency services launched a large-scale rescue operation last night, Thursday 10th July, after two men became stranded and were pulled out to sea near the shipwreck at Formby Point.

The alarm was raised when Southport Coastguard Team were tasked to reports of two individuals being taken by the incoming tide. The situation quickly escalated into a full-scale emergency response involving multiple agencies.

Two boats, two quad bikes, and a drone from Southport Lifeboat, along with lifeboats from New Brighton and the Hoylake hovercraft, were deployed. Crosby Coastguard Team was also tasked to assist in the rescue efforts.

One of the casualties was dramatically pulled from the water after he was located half a mile out to sea by the Southport Lifeboat team, clinging to the shipwreck and struggling to stay afloat after taking in sea water.

A quad bike from Southport Lifeboat also located one of the men on the tide line. Both casualties were quickly transferred to awaiting ambulances and taken to Southport General Hospital for further treatment and checks.

A spokesperson from the Coastguard said:

“This was a serious and dangerous situation made worse by alcohol. The tide in this area is fast-moving and unpredictable, and these two individuals are extremely lucky to be alive. We would like to thank all agencies involved for their swift and coordinated response.”

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of exploring coastal wrecks and entering the water under the influence. Formby’s coastline may appear tranquil, but it is home to fast tides, hidden currents, and potential hazards that can quickly turn deadly.
