Huge fire tears through Bootle garage as homes evacuated and residents told to keep windows closed
A huge fire has broken out at a garage on Fernhill Road in Bootle this evening, with six fire engines and an aerial appliance sent to tackle the blaze.
The fire took hold at Fast Fit Garage and could be seen across the Bootle skyline as thick smoke and flames rose from the building.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said crews were alerted at 8.23pm on Tuesday 29 September and arrived at the scene shortly afterwards.
The incident has prompted a major emergency response involving Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service.
Homes evacuated as crews tackle fire from both sides…
Homes close to the building, including properties on Timon Avenue, have been evacuated as firefighters continue to deal with the incident.
Fire engines have been positioned on Timon Avenue, allowing crews to tackle the blaze from the rear as well as from Fernhill Road at the front of the building.
The roof of the garage appears to have been extensively damaged by the fire, while an aerial appliance has been used as crews work to bring the blaze under control.
The neighbouring Home Furniture store is also believed to have been affected, although the extent of any damage has not yet been officially confirmed.
A large crowd gathered in the area as the incident unfolded, but members of the public are being urged to stay away to allow emergency services to work safely.
A Merseyside Police detective has also arrived at the scene. North West Ambulance Service vehicles which had been in attendance have since left.
There is currently no confirmed information regarding any injuries or the cause of the fire.
Residents warned to shut doors and windows
People living nearby are being advised to keep their doors and windows closed because of smoke from the fire.
Anyone with an existing health condition has been advised to keep their medication nearby and to contact NHS 111 if they experience any ill effects.
People are also being asked to avoid the area while the emergency response continues.

Crews were alerted at 8.23pm and arrived on scene shortly after, with six fire engines and one aerial appliance attending.”
“This is in response to a building fire, crews established water supplies and this incident has been sectorised.”
Sector one has two main branches and one hose reel jet in use with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus (BA). Sector two consists of one main branch, while sector three has two main branches in operation.”
“The aerial appliance is being set up for use. A multi agency meeting has taken between Fire, Police, and North West Ambulance Service.”
“Local residents should keep doors and windows closed. Anyone with an existing health condition should keep medication close and if any ill effects are experienced dial NHS 111 for advice. The incident is ongoing, please avoid the area.”
