Tonight (Saturday 3rd January) the first full Moon of 2026 will rise over Sefton — and it’s a special one.
This is a Supermoon, meaning the Moon is closer to Earth than usual, making it appear bigger, brighter and more striking in the night sky. It’s also known as the Wolf Moon, a traditional winter name linked to the long, cold nights of January.
Because the Moon is at its closest point to Earth (called perigee), it can look up to 14% larger and around 30% brighter than a normal full Moon.
No telescope needed — just step outside, wrap up warm, and look up!
✨ Why Tonight Is Extra Special
🌕 The brightest and biggest full Moon until November 2026
🌠 The Quadrantid meteor shower is also peaking — so you might spot shooting stars
🪐 Jupiter will be shining close to the Moon, adding even more sparkle to the sky
With clear skies expected across the UK, it should be a beautiful celestial show right across Sefton.
So if you’re heading out for an evening walk, popping the dog out, or just glancing out of your window — don’t forget to look up tonight.
The sky is putting on a free show ✨
