Dunnings Bridge Road has been shut this evening at the junction with Kirkstone Road following a dramatic collision involving two HGVs.
The front of one lorry is understood to have ploughed into the rear of another, with smoke seen billowing from the cab of one vehicle shortly after the impact.
Emergency services are at the scene and traffic is now heavily congested across Litherland and surrounding routes.
The crash happened near the Church Road area, close to KFC, and motorists are being urged to avoid the area where possible.
Arriva North West said: "Due to police incident at Church Road, service 52A towards Netherton will operate via Hawthorne Road, omitting Watts Lane and Orrell Road. Service from Netherton to Liverpool is operating its normal route."
We have approached Merseyside Police for further information and will provide updates as soon as they are confirmed.
