A major police investigation is underway after a man was left in a critical condition following a serious assault in Litherland late last night, Sunday 29 March.

Merseyside Police were contacted at around 11.15pm following reports of an altercation on Hinton Street. During the incident, a 35 year old man was reportedly assaulted by a group of males, suffering injuries to his head, face and hands. It is believed one of the suspects was in possession of a long handled weapon.

The group then made off from the scene along Webster Street. The victim was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

A large police cordon remains in place covering Webster Street and Hinton Street, with forensic officers carrying out detailed examinations. House to house enquiries, CCTV checks and witness appeals are all ongoing as part of the investigation.

Detective Chief Inspector Dave Jones said: “We are carrying out a number of lines of enquiry to establish what has taken place.”

“We believe the injured male was assaulted by a group of individuals who were wearing face coverings at the junction of Hinton Street and Webster Street. The group have then made off.”

“We have carried out enquiries in the local area and we are appealing for anyone who was in the area of Hinton Street and Webster Street at around 11.15pm last night who saw or heard anything or believes they captured something significant on their doorbell camera or dashcam to contact us.”

Local residents have described a heavy police presence throughout the night, with some reporting that the group may have fled towards Thornton Street. A bicycle has also reportedly been recovered within the cordon as part of the investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Merseyside Police via social media or by calling 101, quoting incident reference 26000249949.

Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
