Exciting plans to bring new padel courts to north Sefton have taken a major step forward, with a formal planning application now submitted to Sefton Council.
Sefton Padel Limited has lodged its proposal to transform part of Victoria Park in Southport into a modern sporting hub, featuring five new padel courts and three refurbished tennis courts. The company hopes to complete the first phase in time for Spring 2026.
The development will include changing facilities, showers, toilets, and a grab-and-go coffee kiosk open to both players and park visitors. There will also be vending machines for racket and ball hire, alongside a public seating area where spectators can relax and enjoy the action.
This application marks the first phase of Sefton Council’s wider partnership with Sefton Padel, which will see a total of 11 padel courts and nine refurbished tennis courts delivered across three locations in #Southport, #Formby, and #Crosby. The Southport site will be the first to move ahead under the agreement.
A spokesperson for Sefton Padel Limited said: “We’re thrilled to confirm that the planning application for Birkdale Padel, on behalf of Sefton Padel Limited, has now been officially submitted.”
“We appreciate everyone’s patience — several specialist surveys had to be completed before we could submit the final plans.”
“We’re also excited to share that our court surface will now be blue, matching the colour used on the professional padel tour for improved visibility.”
The Birkdale Padel site will be located behind Penelope’s in Victoria Park, with over 80 free parking spaces available on Rotten Row (two-hour limit).
The first phase will feature two open-air courts launching in spring, followed by three covered courts by the end of summer 2026.
The spokesperson added: “We’re incredibly grateful to Sefton Council for their continued support.”
“The planning process usually takes up to 12 weeks, so we’re hoping for a decision around Christmas or New Year — perfectly timed to keep us on track for our spring opening.”
“We encourage residents to join our waiting list at seftonpadel.com to receive updates, register early interest for membership and court bookings, and learn about sponsorship or advertising opportunities.”
Council Leader Cllr Marion Atkinson welcomed the progress, saying: “I’m delighted that we’re working with a new Sefton-based business to deliver this exciting project, which will give people across the borough the opportunity to take part in the fast-growing sport of padel.”
“All three sites will be delivered and maintained to a high standard, with features such as secure smart-entry systems and automated lighting. These new facilities, alongside the refurbished tennis courts, will help us ensure Sefton’s parks remain vibrant and sustainable spaces that meet the needs of our communities.”
Paul McComb, Director of Sefton Padel, added: “We’re proud to be partnering with Sefton Council and local volunteers to bring world-class padel facilities to Sefton. This is an exciting opportunity to grow a new sport locally and create an inclusive space that everyone can enjoy.”
With plans now officially submitted and community interest already growing, Birkdale Padel looks set to become a major new addition to Sefton’s sporting landscape.
