Police introduce Section 60 and 60AA powers across South Sefton
A Section 60 Order (Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994) has been introduced in south Sefton following reports of attempted e-bike robberies in the area.
The order began at 12pm today (Tuesday 15 September) and will run until 12pm tomorrow (Wednesday 16 September). It gives officers additional powers to search people who are suspected of involvement in criminality and disorder.
The zone will cover all areas within the boundaries of Ormskirk Road, Park Lane, Bridle Road, Bailey Drive, Linacre Lane, Crosby Road South, Cambridge Road, Brook Vale, Perimeter of Rimrose Valley Country Park down to Lydiate Lane, Northern Perimeter Road to Switch Island.
It authorises all males of any ethnicity aged between 14 and 30 years of age to be searched if they are believed to be involved any crimes.
It also includes a Section 60aa authorisation, meaning failure to remove a face covering when asked by an officer who believes it is being used for the purpose of concealing identity could result in arrest. Any face covering can also be seized by a police officer.
The measure has been brought in following reports that males, who were armed with bladed weapons, were threatening e-bike riders in the area yesterday afternoon.
There have been no reported injuries, but an investigation is ongoing to find those responsible.
Park Lane falls within EVOLVE Netherton which is Merseyside’s response to the Home Officer’s Clear, Hold, Build strategy and was launched in January 2023 in response to the impact of serious and organised crime on the community.
The operation sees officers work with communities and partners to tackle serious and organised crime and help make neighbourhoods safer.
Since the launch of EVOLVE Netherton there have been:
Nearly 200 arrests
Large quantities of drugs seized including cannabis, cocaine, heroin and ketamine
Hundreds of thousands of cash seized from criminals
Multiple firearms seized
More than 700 stop searches undertaken
Hundreds of vulnerable people safeguarded
