Princess Anne visits Southport for national Sea Cadets sailing and Windsurfing Regatta
Southport welcomed a royal visitor today, Saturday 26 September, as Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal visited the town for a major national Sea Cadets event.
Princess Anne was in Southport in her role as Patron of the Marine Society and Sea Cadets, attending the organisation’s National Sailing and Windsurfing Regatta at Waterside Lodge on Marine Drive.
The visit was officially listed in the Royal Diary, which confirmed that The Princess Royal would attend the national event in Southport today.
The regatta brings together young Sea Cadets for sailing and windsurfing competition, celebrating the skills, teamwork and confidence developed through watersports and Sea Cadet training.
Princess Anne has a longstanding association with the organisation and is also Admiral of the Sea Cadet Corps.
The event was held at Waterside Lodge, situated alongside Southport Marine Lake on Marine Drive. The purpose built activity centre is the headquarters of Sefton North Scouts and provides facilities for a wide range of watersports and activities including sailing, kayaking, canoeing, power boating and rafting.
There was plenty of interest locally surrounding the royal visit, with residents reporting seeing a large helicopter land on the field at Montgomery Avenue during the day.
Princess Anne’s presence in Southport put the town on the national royal diary for the day and provided a memorable occasion for the young people, volunteers and organisers taking part in the National Sailing and Windsurfing Regatta.
The visit also highlighted Southport Marine Lake and Waterside Lodge’s role in providing watersports and outdoor activities for young people from Sefton and much further afield.
The Princess Royal is well known for her longstanding support of maritime organisations and youth development through her work with the Marine Society and Sea Cadets.
