SML Hub, a Democratic Self-Managed Learning Hub for young people aged 11–15, is inviting local businesses and community members in Waterloo to get involved in an exciting new project that helps young people learn, grow, and connect with the wider community.
The project began with a pilot in February, and following its success, the second stage opened in Waterloo this September. The Hub is now settled into a welcoming venue in the area, and the young people are enthusiastic about becoming active, positive members of the community around them.
At SML Hub, young people work together democratically to shape their own culture and reflect on what it means to be part of a community. Naturally, this has led to discussions about connecting more closely with the wider Waterloo area. Many of the students enjoy talking with local shop owners, librarians, and small business teams, and they are eager to build real relationships with the people who make up their neighbourhood.
To support this, the young people have designed their own SML Hub lanyards. When visiting the area, the badges will help them be visible and recognised for the pioneering work they are doing.
With this badge, the students hope to:
• Build genuine connections with local shops and businesses
• Negotiate small discounts when appropriate
• Support local businesses during their lunch breaks
• Be recognised as a positive and respectful youth presence in Waterloo
SML Hub is now creating a list of local businesses who would like to be involved. Even small gestures — such as a small discount or simply welcoming the students into your shop — can make a meaningful difference.
The Hub is also looking for people who would be happy to speak to the young people for an hour about their career, work, or hobby. Their Self-Managed Learning approach supports a wide variety of learning goals — from cyber security to building independence by confidently visiting shops alone. Hearing real-life experiences helps students understand what different pathways truly look like.
If you are a local business or individual who would like to offer a small discount, share your experience, or find out more, you can get in touch or complete the form below:

SML Hub hopes that Waterloo can become a place where these young people feel supported, welcomed, and seen — and where they can build confidence as they become part of the community.
