Southport to Pause and Remember on the Second Anniversary of the July 29 Tragedy

An open letter has been issued to the people of Southport ahead of the second anniversary of the devastating events of 29 July 2024, inviting the community to come together in remembrance of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Bebe King and Elsie Dot Stancombe, the three young girls whose lives were so tragically taken, and to honour everyone whose lives were changed forever that day.p

In an open letter to the community, organisers have acknowledged that this will be an incredibly difficult time for the families of Alice, Bebe and Elsie, those who were injured both physically and psychologically, their loved ones, and the many people whose lives were changed forever.

The letter also pays tribute to the emergency services and all those who rushed to help on the day, recognising that the impact of the tragedy continues to be felt across the community.

To mark the anniversary, a three minute silence will take place across Southport at 3pm on Wednesday 29 July 2026. Sefton Council and other public bodies will observe the silence, and residents are invited to join wherever they are.

In recognition of the deeply personal nature of the anniversary, people are respectfully asked not to leave floral tributes, particularly at Hart Street or at local schools. Instead, anyone wishing to pay tribute is encouraged to consider making a donation to a local Southport cause in memory of the girls.

A number of reflective spaces will also be available across the town, offering people the opportunity to light a candle, say a prayer, speak with someone or simply spend a quiet moment in reflection. Trained professionals will be on hand to provide support for anyone who may need it.

Flags will be flown at half mast on public buildings throughout Sefton as a mark of respect.

Organisers have emphasised that there is no right or wrong way to remember the anniversary. Whether people choose to observe the silence, visit a reflective space, spend time with loved ones or reflect quietly in their own way, everyone is encouraged to do whatever feels right for them.
