The latest Department for Education data has revealed the top-performing secondary schools for GCSE results in Sefton for the 2024/25 academic year — and St Mary’s College in Crosby has taken the top spot across the borough, followed closely by Formby High and Birkdale High.
The newly published figures show that St Mary’s College achieved the highest overall GCSE performance score in Sefton, with 63.1%, followed by Formby High School with 54.2%, and Birkdale High School with 51.9%.
Here’s how the top Sefton schools ranked:
St Mary’s College, Crosby – 63.1
Formby High School – 54.2
Birkdale High School – 51.9
Greenbank High School – 50.6
Chesterfield High School – 48.3
Holy Family Catholic High School – 44.6
Meols Cop High School – 44.5
Maricourt Catholic High School – 44.5
While St Mary’s leads across Sefton, Formby High School remains the top-performing secondary school in Formby, continuing its strong record of academic excellence and success.
This year’s GCSE performance tables come just two weeks before parents must submit their secondary school applications for September 2026, making the results particularly timely.
Unlike previous years, this year’s data does not include the pupil progress (‘added value’) score, as pupils in the Class of 2025 did not sit national primary assessments in 2020 due to Covid-19 lockdowns. Despite this omission, the results still give valuable insight into overall school performance.
St Mary’s College, Formby High School and Birkdale High have been praised for their consistent standards and commitment to delivering high-quality education, helping students achieve excellent results year after year.
