Three firearms and ammunition were recovered yesterday, Wednesday 27 August, in two separate incidents in Merseyside.
Just before 6.30pm, Matrix officers carried out a warrant at an address in Bootle. Following a search, officers found two viable firearms along with ammunition inside the property. A large quantity of Class A drugs, suspected crack cocaine and heroin, were also seized.
Two women, aged 62 and 26 years from Bootle, were arrested on suspicion of a number of offences including:
Possession with intent to supply Class A drugs (suspected cocaine and heroin)
Two counts of possession of a firearm without a certificate
Acquire/use/possess criminal property
Both remain in police custody to be questioned.
In a second incident, a member of the public found a firearm and ammunition in woodland in Childwall and immediately reported it to police.
The handgun has been made safe and is being forensically tested, along with the two other firearms recovered in Bootle.
Matrix Inspector Mark Worrall said: “These three viable firearms and ammunition have been taken off the streets which prevents them from being used to cause fear and harm in our communities.”
“We would like to thank the member of the public for finding the live firearm and ammunition which could have ended up in the hands of a child. We are now forensically testing it to see if it is linked to any incidents.”
“Finding this firearm highlights to criminals, who may think they can hide firearms in obscure places, that they can still be found and removed from our streets to prevent serious injury.”
“This emphasises how important it is to inspect around your property for weapons hidden in obscure places, as it goes to show that criminals will conceal their weapons in the most unusual places.”
Inspector Worrall added: “We all know too well the substantial damage and harm drugs and weapons has on our communities.”
“We rely on community intelligence to discover where drugs and weapons are being stored and who is using them so we can remove them from our streets. I would ask that the public continue to be our eyes and ears and get in touch if you have information.”
