Under 13 boys footballers at St. Mary’s College in Crosby have crowned a season of soccer success at the school by landing three top trophies.
This outstanding collection of silverware includes the English Schools National Small Schools Cup which St. Mary’s won after a brilliant 3-0 victory over Royal Russell School from Croydon in the final at the Hawthorns, home of West Bromwich Albion.
This is only the third time in St. Mary’s 100-year-plus history that the school has reached a national football final, and only the second time the college have been crowned national champions.

Goals from Jacob Woods, skipper Oscar Townsley and Patrick Donegan sealed the win in the final which was screened live on the English Schools FA’s official Youtube channel.
Jacob was also honoured as man of the match, with one of the commentators hailing his performance by saying that “Jacob’s been a cracker!”
There was also praise for St. Mary’s from the pundit who said: “This is just a college that creates talent.”
Elsewhere at the end of a very busy season the under 13 squad also won the Sefton Cup for the second year in a row, beating Chesterfield High School 5-2 in the final at Marine FC.
And the school completed its trio of under 13 trophies with the Sefton Small Schools Cup after seeing off the challenge of Merchant Taylors’ School with a 4-2 victory in the final, also held at Marine FC.
All in all it’s been a remarkably successful year for boys football at St. Mary’s, with the under 12 team reaching the final of the Merseyside Cup (still to be played), and the school’s first team reaching the final of the Sefton Cup, which they lost to a very strong side from Deyes High School in Maghull.
St. Mary’s Principal, Mike Kennedy, commented: “Everyone at the school has been thrilled with the success of our under 13 footballers who have gone from strength to strength as the season has progressed.
“Their achievements speak for themselves and I would like to pay tribute to the talent and also the commitment of all the players in the squad – a team cannot achieve this level of success without putting a huge amount of effort into preparation and training.
“I would also like to congratulate staff members Derek Williams (Team Manager and Head of Boys’ PE) and Tom Manley (Coach) who have played such an important role in nurturing the talent of these young players and creating such a winning team,” added Mr Kennedy.
