Two males from Sefton have been charged following a frightening armed burglary at a flat in Birkenhead on New Year’s Eve.
Merseyside Police received reports just before 10pm on Wednesday that two males wearing balaclavas had forced their way into a property in Birkenhead. The suspects are reported to have threatened the occupants with a machete before stealing a PlayStation 5 console and a bottle of vodka.
Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident.
Officers attended the scene and, following enquiries, four people were later arrested in Poulton. During the arrests, the stolen PlayStation 5 was recovered and a machete was also seized by police.
On Thursday, Leighton Conlan, aged 18, of Bakersfield Drive, #Southport, and a 16-year-old male from #Litherland (who cannot be named for legal reasons) were charged with aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit burglary with intent to steal.
Both were refused bail and are due to appear at Liverpool Adult Remand Court today, Friday 2 January.
Two women — an 18-year-old from Wirral and a 19-year-old from Liverpool — were also arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary with intent to steal. Both have since been released on police bail with conditions, pending further enquiries.
The arrests form part of Merseyside Police’s Winter of Action, a major operation running between 1 December and 31 January 2026, aimed at keeping town centres safe over the festive period and beyond by tackling crime, reassuring communities, and ensuring high streets remain welcoming and safe.
