A much-loved Crosby community group was proudly featured on BBC Breakfast this morning, Monday 5th January, celebrating the inspiring work of the Crosby Wombles — and shining a national spotlight on a group that quietly makes a huge difference across Sefton.
The Crosby Wombles are a friendly, welcoming group of like-minded people who are united by one simple goal: to keep the area they live in clean, cared for and litter-free. But their work goes far beyond litter picking — they are about building community, connection and pride in where people live.
Their aim is to encourage, equip, educate and enable local residents to take part in solo litter picks, while also offering the chance to join organised group events that bring people together in a positive, uplifting way.
The group says they “Womble because we care” — about the world we live in, and about all the plants, trees and wildlife that share it with us. Rather than focusing on blame, debates or negativity, the Wombles simply roll up their sleeves and get on with making their area cleaner and kinder for everyone.
Many members have quietly been picking litter on their own for years, often wishing they could do more when faced with heavily littered ‘grot spots’. The Crosby Wombles were formed to change that — giving people the confidence, support and community spirit to tackle those areas together.
Inspired by the wonderful work of Carnforth Wombles, the Crosby group is now part of a growing movement of Wombles making a real difference in communities across the country — and today’s BBC Breakfast feature shows just how powerful local action can be.
Their message is beautifully simple:
“All you need to be a Womble is a warm heart and a smile.”
Crosby Wombles truly are making a difference to the community they live in — proving that when people come together, even small actions can create big change.
