A man has been arrested after an e-bike rider injured an officer as he tried to escape from police in Bootle.
At around 6.45pm on Wednesday 25 June, officers were on patrol on Orrell Lane when they saw a male on a high-powered e-bike. He was wearing a face covering and riding in a dangerous manner.
After following him onto Trinity Park, the rider turned around and attempted to drive directly at the two officers, which caused injuries to a male officer’s arm and hand.
The suspect then lost control and fell off the e-bike, allowing officers to make an arrest at the scene.
A 44-year-old man from Litherland has been arrested on suspicion of common assault of an emergency worker, theft of a motor vehicle, using a motor vehicle without insurance, possession of a controlled Class B drug (cannabis) and driving whilst disqualified. He remains in police custody.
The bike, which is suspected as being stolen, has been seized and enquiries are ongoing to locate its rightful owner.
Sefton Targeted Policing Chief Inspector Jordan Quinn said: “We know the frustration and upset that e-bikes being ridden anti-socially can cause in our communities.
“This incident in Bootle highlights how officers on proactive patrol can spot the dangerous use of these bikes and take positive action. Despite the efforts of the suspect to evade police, were able to detain him.”
“An officer was injured while attempting to make the arrest, which is completely unacceptable. Our officers serve their communities with bravery and determination on a daily basis, but to face such reckless behaviour is completely unacceptable, and we will fully investigate all such incidents which endanger the public and our officers.”
“Where the community have told us electric bikes are being used for this purpose, we have increased high visibility police patrols.”
“The support of the public is a vital part of our efforts to stop criminals bringing intimidation, violence and misery into the heart of our communities. If you have any information about where stolen electric bikes are being ridden and stored, please contact us and we will do the rest.”
