Roadworks officially began today, Monday 23rd June 2025, on Cambridge Road in Waterloo, marking the start of a major sewer replacement project that is expected to cause disruption well into December.
United Utilities has launched the large-scale works to replace ageing sewer pipes beneath the road, which will now be closed in phases for nearly six months. The closure is being carried out in two sections to allow continued access to Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre, as well as for residents and businesses along the route—but delays and congestion are expected.
Adding to the disruption, the footpath alongside Potters Barn Park has also been closed from today and will remain shut until 24th October 2025. Pedestrians are being diverted to the opposite side of the road, with signage in place to guide walkers safely.
📢 Local Concerns Over Lengthy Disruption
The extended timeline has sparked frustration among residents, business owners and regular commuters who rely on Cambridge Road daily. The road is a key route for access into Crosby and Waterloo and is especially busy during school runs, weekends, and the summer tourism season.
While United Utilities has emphasised that the work is necessary to modernise and future-proof the sewer system, many locals have expressed surprise that the project will take up to six months to complete.
