A teenager has been arrested following a shocking incident at Maghull Cricket Club, where a large group of youths armed with weapons disrupted a junior cricket training session, leaving children in tears and parents frightened.
The incident took place on the evening of Friday 3rd May, during a junior practice session on the club’s pitch at Tommy Gent Way. At around 7.30pm, a group of youths – some reportedly carrying knives, hammers, and even a garden spade – gathered on the field and began what has been described as organised fighting.

Approximately 50 children, aged between 9 and 13, were present at the time, waiting to begin their cricket session. According to the club and witnesses, the young players had to be quickly escorted away from the area for their safety. Many of them were visibly distressed, with one mother describing the incident as “truly terrifying”.
The mother, who witnessed the events with her two children, said: “It was awful. The kids were in tears, and you could feel the panic. You just don’t expect to see something like that during a children’s sports session.”
Maghull Cricket Club released a statement expressing their sadness that what should have been a joyful start to the cricket season was marred by violence and anti-social behaviour. “Sadly, the first game of the season also marked the first time in 2025 the police have had to be called due to anti-social behaviour,” the club said. The club, which has been part of the local community since 1926, is urging for greater protection for young people taking part in grassroots sports.
Following the incident, the group of youths made off towards the Liverpool-Leeds Canal. Thankfully, no physical injuries were reported.
On Sunday 5th May, Merseyside Police arrested a 14-year-old boy from Maghull on suspicion of affray, possession of a weapon in a public place, and possession of a Class B controlled drug (cannabis). He remains in custody and will be questioned by officers.

The police investigation is ongoing, and officers are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who may have CCTV, dashcam, or mobile footage, to come forward.
