Students and staff at St. Mary’s College in Crosby are celebrating another resounding summer of success following an excellent set of GCSE examination results.
Once again, the school has recorded impressive results, with almost half of all passes, 43 per cent, awarded at the highest grades of 9 to 7, an increase from 39 per cent in 2025.

More than a quarter of candidates, 29 per cent, achieved seven or more passes at grades 9 to 7, up from 26 per cent last year.
More than half of all students, 57 per cent, secured ten or more GCSE passes, with many achieving 11 or even 12 qualifications. An impressive 16 per cent of candidates achieved ten or more passes at grades 9 to 7.
Staff at St. Mary’s believe the outstanding results reflect the school’s broad and balanced curriculum and its approach of not imposing restrictions on the number of GCSE subjects students are able to take.
Joint top of the class this summer are 16-year-old Sophie Quint from Crosby and 16-year-old Joseph Olayinka-Lawal from Huyton, who both achieved an exceptional seven grade 9s and four grade 8s across their 11 GCSEs.

Sophie said: “I was quite nervous picking up my results but I am relieved now and pleased with how I did. I would like to thank my sister Anna who got her A-level results last week for always supporting me while we were both studying.”
“I am looking forward to joining the Sixth Form at St. Mary’s and am going to study Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Music at A-level.”
Joseph said: “I am extremely happy with my results. All of the hard work has paid off. I want to thank my subject teachers, my parents, aunt, uncle and grandad for all their support.
“I am staying at St. Mary’s for Sixth Form and will be doing Biology, Chemistry and Maths at A-level.”

Together with Andres Funes-Cervera, Hazel Liu and Samuel Miller, Sophie and Joseph make up St. Mary’s ‘famous five’, with all five students achieving 11 or more GCSEs at the highest grades of 9 to 7.
Exceptional Results for Younger Students
There were also a number of other particularly praiseworthy individual performances.
Solomiia Protsenko achieved a grade 9 in her Russian GCSE, despite taking the qualification two years early while in Year 9, at just 13 years old.
Similarly, 15-year-old Jan Wolski from Mossley Hill achieved a grade 9 in GCSE Polish, having taken the examination 12 months early while in Year 10.
Further Maths Success
St. Mary’s staff are particularly pleased with students’ performance in Further Maths this summer, an exceptionally challenging qualification taken in addition to the regular Maths GCSE.
Almost a fifth of Further Maths candidates, 19 per cent, achieved the highest possible grade 9.
In addition, 50 per cent of St. Mary’s candidates achieved grades 9 to 7 in Further Maths, while 44 per cent secured either a grade 9 or grade 8 in the subject.

Commenting on this summer’s GCSE results, St. Mary’s College Principal Mike Kennedy said: “These summer’s results are extremely pleasing and we are obviously very proud of the achievements of our GCSE students in these important examinations.”
“Their successes are a testament both to all their hard work over the past five years, and the fantastic support they have received from staff and their parents over this period.”
“Students can now use these excellent results as a firm foundation on which to build future success at A-level, at university and in their future careers.”
Mr Kennedy also highlighted St. Mary’s strong record within the borough, pointing out that the college has finished in first place in the Sefton GCSE results league table for several years.
He said he is confident that when the next set of school performance tables is published by the Department for Education, St. Mary’s will once again be in pole position.
The school’s staff team is also delighted with the value-added performance of candidates this summer, with many students achieving results above their predicted examination grades.

Staff say this provides further evidence of the excellent progress pupils make during their time at St. Mary’s College and rounds off another extremely successful GCSE results day for the Crosby school.
