It was a frightening and unsettling sight for residents in Netherton this morning after a man was seen pacing up and down Glovers Lane waving a large kitchen knife above his head.
The incident, which happened at around 8am on Saturday 21st June, took place near the junction with St Jerome’s Way, not far from Marion Square. Witnesses described the moment as “terrifying” as the man was seen holding the knife in public before reportedly placing it into a bag he was carrying.
Thankfully, no one was physically harmed or directly threatened, but the presence of a knife-wielding individual in a residential street understandably left many local people deeply alarmed.
Police responded swiftly and arrested the man just after 8:10am. Following a search, two kitchen knives were recovered from the scene and are now being examined for forensic evidence.

A 24-year-old man from Netherton has been arrested on suspicion of affray, possession of a bladed article in a public place, and a public order offence. He is currently in police custody.
Detective Inspector John Holden of Merseyside Police said: “While there is no suggestion the suspect made any verbal threats, this incident would clearly have been alarming for any witnesses.
Officers made a swift arrest and our investigation will seek to establish the full circumstances.
Tackling knife crime remains a priority for Merseyside Police and we will take robust action against anyone found to be in possession of a knife.”
Local councillor for St. Oswald ward, Joe Johnson, was quickly on the scene at Marion Square, reassuring residents. He thanked the police for their fast response and urged people not to speculate about the man’s identity on social media, as rumours can lead to further fear and confusion.
“I absolutely share all concerns about this incident – seeing someone in public with a knife is shockingly wrong and he should face the full force of the law,” he said.
“But until the facts are confirmed, I ask that people refrain from spreading speculation online. I’ll continue to update the community as I hear more.”
At Sefton Bubble, we understand how distressing this must have been for anyone who witnessed it — especially so early in the morning in a community where people expect to feel safe. Our thanks go to the Merseyside Police officers who responded so quickly to bring the situation under control.
