Residents across Bootle, Litherland, Netherton, Crosby, Maghull, Aintree, Formby, Ainsdale, Birkdale and Southport are being urged to take extra care today as temperatures soar.
At 7:30am, temperatures are already around 21°C, with highs of around 31°C expected across Sefton later today.
This isn’t just about feeling uncomfortable – extreme heat can be dangerous and even life-threatening. Many people are unaware that more people in England die during periods of severe hot weather than from any other type of severe weather warning, including storms, flooding and snow.
Please take today’s heat seriously and help protect yourself, your family and vulnerable members of our community.
💧 Stay hydrated – drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
🏠 Keep your home as cool as possible by closing curtains and blinds in rooms facing the sun.
🌳 Avoid direct sunlight and postpone strenuous activities between 11am and 3pm, when temperatures and UV levels will be at their highest.
🧴 If you do need to go outside, wear sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat, loose-fitting light-coloured clothing and always carry water with you.
🚗 If you’re travelling, check road conditions and public transport before setting off, as the heat may cause delays. If using buses or trains:
• Carry plenty of drinking water.
• Take a small battery-powered fan if possible.
• Wear lightweight clothing.
• If you begin to feel unwell, get off at the next stop and seek fresh air.
• Keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable passengers who may be struggling.
❤️ Please check on elderly neighbours, relatives, vulnerable people, young children and anyone living alone. A simple phone call or visit could make all the difference today. If you are concerned about someone’s health, contact NHS 111.
🌊 If you’re visiting the Sefton coastline, including Crosby, Formby, Ainsdale or Southport beaches:
• Enter the sea gradually to reduce the risk of cold-water shock.
• Swim only where lifeguards are on duty.
• If you or someone else gets into difficulty in the water, Float to Live by lying on your back until you recover or help arrives.
🔦 Hot weather can also place extra demand on the electricity network, so it is sensible to have torches, spare batteries and a fully charged power bank available in case of a power cut.
⚠️ Please don’t underestimate today’s weather. Temperatures around 31°C can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion and potentially life-threatening heatstroke.
**Stay cool, stay hydrated, look after one another, and stay safe across Sefton today
