Drivers in Sefton are being advised to plan ahead as the A59 Northway, between Dodds Lane and Robbins Island in Maghull, will be closed overnight for two weeks to allow resurfacing works to take place.

When will it happen?
Starting Monday 29th September 2025
Running for two weeks
Each night from 7pm – 3am
Where will be closed?
Week 1 (29th Sept – 5th Oct): Southbound closed (Robbins Island ➝ Dodds Lane)
Week 2 (6th Oct – 12th Oct): Northbound closed (Dodds Lane ➝ Robbins Island)
Fully signed diversions will be in place to guide drivers around the closures.
Why are the works happening?
The closures are part of the A59 Corridor Improvement Scheme, a major project by Sefton Council to improve safety and transport links for everyone using the route.

The scheme includes:
✅ A brand-new Cyclops junction at Kenyons Lane – the first of its kind in Sefton – which gives cyclists their own orbital lane around the junction, keeping them separate from pedestrians and vehicles.
✅ Wider segregated cycle lanes on both sides of the A59 between Dodds Lane and Robbins Island, providing safer routes for cyclists and walkers.
✅ Safer pedestrian crossings at key points, including around Robbins Island roundabout.
✅ Road resurfacing to improve driving conditions.
✅ A new 40mph speed limit between Kenyons Lane and the West Lancashire boundary (currently 60mph), making the route safer for all road users.

What’s the aim?
The overall goal is to make the A59 safer and more user-friendly for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians. With new housing developments in the area, these changes will support local residents with safer journeys to schools, shops, workplaces, and community facilities.
