Police have confirmed that an 18 year old man has been arrested following a serious incident in Netherton, with officers continuing enquiries at the scene.
Merseyside Police received a report on Sunday 12 April that a woman had been raped in Copy Lane Park the previous evening, Saturday 11 April. The incident is believed to have taken place in the park area, which remains cordoned off while forensic teams carry out detailed examinations.
The woman is being supported by specially trained officers as enquiries continue.
On Monday 13 April, following ongoing investigations, officers from Durham Constabulary arrested an 18 year old man from Darlington on suspicion of rape. He remains in custody and is being questioned by police.
A visible police presence has remained in the area, with sections of Copy Lane Park sealed off as forensic enquiries are carried out. Officers are expected to remain at the scene while evidence is gathered.
Police have issued a reminder that anyone who may have information, or who may have been in the area at the time, should come forward. Even the smallest detail could assist the investigation.
They also stressed that support is available to anyone affected by sexual violence, whether or not they wish to make a formal report.
To report a sexual offence, you can call 101 where you will be spoken to by specially trained officers. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111. In an emergency, always call 999.
Specialist support services are available free of charge and do not require a police referral. These services can offer confidential advice, including for those who are unsure about reporting an incident.
Victims can also choose to access support through the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, known as Safe Place, or through an Independent Sexual Violence Advisor. Medical examinations can be carried out and any evidence securely stored, allowing time to decide whether to proceed with a police investigation.
Support is available locally across Liverpool, Sefton and Wirral through RASA Merseyside on 0151 558 1801. In St Helens and Knowsley, support is available via RASASC Cheshire and Merseyside on 01925 221 546 or 0330 363 0063.
Further help is also available through Victim Care Merseyside as part of ongoing work to support victims and tackle violence against women and girls across the region.
