Merseyside Police have confirmed that a man has been arrested following the theft of a disabled pensioner’s wallet in Waterloo.
The incident happened at around 10am on Friday 1 May after the pensioner left the Post Office on Lorne Road. Police say he was approached by a man who reportedly distracted him before stealing his wallet, which contained bank cards and cash.
A short time later, an attempt was made to use the stolen bank cards at a nearby petrol station.
Officers quickly circulated a description of the suspect and carried out searches in the area. At around 12 midday, a man was detained by officers at a nearby train station.
A 49 year old man, of no fixed abode, was arrested on suspicion of theft and fraud by false representation. He has since been bailed pending further enquiries.
Sefton Response Inspector Pete Charnley said:
“This is a great example of community policing. The officers attended the scene and were able to carry out a search of the area, detain someone very quickly and offer reassurance to the victim.”
